Level 1 Field Evaluation Criteria

Level 1 Field Evaluation Criteria

Performance Evaluation Scale: 

  • 0 = “Novice” – (Unconscious-Incompetence = UI) Student has no understanding of concept and cannot perform “text book” technique ant of the time
  • 1 = “Basic” – (Conscious-Incompetence = CI): Student has an understanding of concept and can perform “textbook” technique properly as many times as not (50%)
  • 2 = “Beginner” – (Conscious-Competence = CC1): Student has a good understanding of concept and can perform “text book” technique 75% of the time.
  • 3 = “Intermediate” – (Conscious-Competence = CC2): Student has very good understanding of concept and can perform “text book” technique 90% of the time.
  • 4 = “Superior” – (Conscious-Competence = CC3): Student has superior understanding of concept and can perform “text book” technique all of the time.
  • 5 = “Accomplished” – (Unconscious-Competence = UC1): Student has superior understanding of concept, can perform “text book” technique all the time and can adjust to changing situations most of the time.
  • 6 = “Advanced” – (Unconscious-Competence = UC2): Student has superior understanding of concept, can perform “text book” technique and can adjust to changing situations all the time. 

One-Umpire Positioning:

  • Batted Ball to the Infield with No Runners on Base
  • Batted Ball to the Outfield with No Runners on Base
  • Batted Ball to the Infield with Runners on Base
  • Batted Ball to the Outfield with Runners on Base
  • Steal Attempt or Pick-Off from the Catcher
  • Every Pick-Off from Pitcher’s Mound

Two-Umpire Positioning:

  • Priorities & Responsibilities  
  • PU & BU Primary/Secondary Responsibilities
  • PU Movements by Priority
  • Starting Position A Development  
  • Starting Position B Development  
  • Starting Position C Development  

Plate Mechanics  – Specialty Plate Mechanics:

  • Brush plate
  • Clearing bat
  • Fair-foul
  • Clearing F2

Plate Mechanics  – Stance – Lower Half Stance Basics:

  • Heel/Toe/Heel/Toe (H/T/H/T)
  • Aggressive Slot-In Position
  • Aggressive Slot-Forward Position
  • Front & Back Foot Angles
  • Foot Width
  • Push Knees Apart

Plate Mechanics  – Stance – Upper Half Stance Basics:

  • Stance Balance
  • Hip Alignment
  • Torso/Shoulders Alignment
  • Head Height

Additional Plate Mechanics:

  • Pitch tracking
  • Voice ball/voice signal strike  
  • Step back relax

Strike Zone:

  • Consistency Through Out Evaluation Period
  • Appropriate for Level of Play
  • Aggressiveness In & Out
