CH4 HELPFUL HINTS WORKING THE BASES

HELPFUL HINTS WHEN WORKING THE BASES:

1. Always know where the ball is.

2. Never make a call on the move, get set and wait until the play is over before you make the call.

3. Tag plays Do not try to outrun the runner to the base. Know the shortcuts available to you. Work for a 90 degree angle to see the whole play.

4. Get as close to the play as possible without interfering.

CH4 THE PIVOT AT FIRST BASE

THE PIVOT AT FIRST BASE IS SO IMPORTANT THAT IT MERITS SPECIAL
DISCUSSION.

CHAPTER 4 UMPIRING THE BASES

UMPIRING THE BASES

The same as working the plate, remember, PAUSE, READ and REACT!! on every play.

Before calling any play it is absolutely necessary for you to stop and get set. Do this before the play happens. Never call a play when you are running to get into position, stop and get set, this way your eyes will not be moving and you will take a better picture of the play.

Mechanics Definition of terms.

Definition of terms

The following terms are used throughout the positioning case studies. Although many of the terms will seem self-explanatory, a brief review will insure complete understanding.

BR - The batter, also referred to as BR (batter-runner)

Defenition of Terms

These are Terms used by baseball umpires during clinics, instruction and discussion of plays or reports.

90-Degree Angle — Tag
This concept determines the umpire’s location on tag plays. The path of the runner into a base or tag application of the tag on a play not involving a base together with the umpire’s line of vision from a location 6-10 feet away, form a 90-degree angle.

90-Degree Angle — Throw

Reason Why People do not Do things

  • They don't know how (requires training to improve)
  • They don't know why(advanced training to understand philosophy's)
  • They don't want to (umpires who are lazy and not committed)
      Which are you?
What are you doing to improve?

Uniforms

The basic uniform consists of gray pants, an umpire shirt, a hat, black shoes, and a black belt.

Many umpire associations provide hats to their members. If yours does this, use that hat. Otherwise, a plain black ball cap with no logo can be purchased and worn.
